Morellino di Scansano is an underappreciated region in Tuscany. Chianti Classico has the notoriety and esteem and that means one thing for Morellino, Value. The wines here are dry reds from the Sangiovese grape variety, known in this region as Morellino. They are produced in the rolling coastal hills around the medieval village of Scansano. There is excellent quality to be found here, largely due to Scansano's particular mesoclimate, including its altitude (roughly 150m / 492ft above sea level), its    southwestern orientation, and its volcanic soils. We were especially lucky to procure a Riserva bottling at an excellent price. Riservas must have spent at least two years maturing. At least one year must be in oak. This results in a more structured wine with greater depth and aging potential.

This bottling from winemaker Elisabetta Geppetti is truly special. They call Elisabetta the Lady of Morellino and the Ambassador of Maremma. She has been the first woman to be the president of a consortium in 1992, year of foundation of the Morellino di Scansano Consortium. The german headliner Der Feinschmecker proclaimed her ‘Wine-maker of the year’ a few years back.

Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2014, Tuscany
Delicately scented, this racy red opens with whispers of blue flower, moist earth and woodland berry. The vibrant straightforward palate delivers raspberry, red cherry and a sprinkling of baking spice alongside zesty acidity and polished tannins.
